Policy
Loyola University New Orleans will adhere to federal and state laws concerning the employment of minors. Supervisors will ensure that:
- Employment is not detrimental to the minor’s health or welfare
- The minor is adequately supervised, and
- Employment does not interfere with the minor’s education
Procedures
No minor under the age of 18, including Loyola students, is allowed to work in any gainful occupation until Loyola has procured and has on file an employment certificate or work permit issued by superintendent of schools where the minor resides. No minor under age 18 is permitted to work for any five-hour period without one meal period of at least thirty minutes. There are also legal restrictions regarding minors operating motor vehicles, working where alcoholic beverages are sold, working under hazardous conditions, and other restrictions.
Consult the Human Resources Department for complete regulations and approval before employing minors under the age of 18. This includes college students as well as non-college teenagers who may be employed as summer camp counselors, tutors, etc.
